Story
Challenged to write a song about the sound of innovation. I had to think through every aspect of innovation. It does come from everything around us, if we pay attention. The result is this powerful and evocative song that blends elements of folk, blues, and modern music to tell a story of change, identity, and innovation. It begins with a nostalgic and intimate setting, evoking images of simpler times filled with cigarette smoke and homemade wine. This sets the stage for a reflection on the inevitability and necessity of change.
The transition from the banjo to keyboards and drums signifies a shift from the past to the present, introducing a more dynamic and contemporary sound. This musical evolution mirrors the theme of transformation within the lyrics.
The song’s narrator, speaking with the wisdom and cadence of an old storyteller, introduces themselves as a force of nature and a symbol of innovation. They embody the elements of the natural world—the wind, trees, mountains, and seas—highlighting the interconnectedness of all things. This personification extends to the human experience, representing the pulse on a wrist, a beating heart, and the rebellious neuron that drives creativity and progress.
The lyrics explore the duality of existence, where the narrator can be both a whisper and a scream, a nightmare and a dream. This reflects the multifaceted nature of innovation and change, which can be both inspiring and challenging.
The repeated refrain, “I am the sound of innovation, can you hear me now?” serves as a call to recognize and embrace the transformative power of creativity and progress. It challenges the listener to be aware of the constant evolution around them and to find their place within it.
Lyrics
(speaks like an old african american)
Everything was fine
Within the cloud of their cigarette smoke
And the blur of their homemade wine
Change however was necessary
Change was divine
In this universe of ours
What’s mine is yours
And Whatever is yours is mine
Let’s hold this up to the sky
Let’s allow it to shine
(banjo turns into keyboards, then the drums comes in)
Let me introduce myself
I am the sound of the wind
I am the hymn of the trees
I am the echo of the mountains
I am the tide of the seas
(bass comes in like a pulse)
I am the pulse on your wrist (bass comes in like a pulse)
I am a beating heart
I am your clenched fist
I am the rebellious little neuron
That helped you through this list
To some I am a whisper
To some I am a scream
To some I am a nightmare
To others I am a dream
I am the sound of innovation
Can you hear me now?
Can you really really hear me?
Let me introduce myself again…
I am the sound of the wind
I am the hymn of the trees
I am the echo of the mountains
I am the tide of the seas
(bass comes in like a pulse)
I am the pulse on your wrist (bass comes in like a pulse)
I am a beating heart
I am your clenched fist
I am the rebellious little neuron
That helped you through this list
To some I am a whisper
To some I am a scream
To some I am a nightmare
To others I am a dream
I am the sound of innovation
Can you hear me now?
