Story
“Restless” tells the story of a person who has been deeply hurt by a partner’s betrayal. After dedicating a significant part of their life to this relationship, they discover that their partner has been unfaithful. This revelation leads to a period of intense emotional turmoil, marked by sleepless nights and a struggle to cope with the pain.
The person’s efforts to help their partner see their inner beauty and worth are met with indifference and betrayal. Despite the person’s loyalty and the many choices they had, they remained true, hoping to heal their partner’s wounds with love. However, their partner continued to be swayed by others, leading to a deep sense of frustration and sorrow.
The song reflects on the realization that the partner’s favorite song, “Unfaithful,” symbolized their betrayal. The person’s attempts to hold on and understand are met with rejection and tears. Despite the temptation for revenge, the person chooses not to wish harm, feeling a sense of relief that the lies have taken the partner away.
The lyrics highlight the partner’s promiscuity and the ease with which they were swayed by others. The person expresses regret for the high price paid for the partner’s love, realizing too late that the sacrifice was not worth it. Now free from the partner’s grip, the person acknowledges the emotional toll but also recognizes that partner will continue to seek validation from others.
Lyrics
Restless and in defiance of the sleep that sneaks in through my eyes
I twist and I turn but I can’t escape the burn of all your terrible lies
Another cigarette finds itself lit and my mind is on the run
I try to catch up as fast as I could till I am greeted by the sun
The wounds you inflicted left me half-dead but you made sure that I was breathing
So that I could feel the hurt for a while and lay before you bleeding
The rays of the sun summons the sky while smoke clouds the room
The smell of tar covers the air but fails to erase the scent of your perfume
I wasted my time trying to make you see the beauty that’s within you
You gave it away and left it behind with the dignity you threw
I picked up the pieces, mended what’s broken and dug through all the dirt
While you stood there all proud to let them all see the smile inside your skirt
I wondered in silence and contemplation of where everything went wrong
But it all made sense once I internalized that ‘Unfaithful’ was your favorite song
Yet I stood by you, true as can be and you know I was never short of choices
I sang to you softly to help you heal but all you heard were their voices
You hated me most for I was the truth that you defied for years
I held your hand hoping you’d understand but all I got was a handful of tears
Revenge could be sweet and all too potent but I could never wish you any harm
I am just thankful for all of the lies that took you away from my arms
You readily called me a cheap invitation which you accepted cause you were invited
Well who does not know that it never took much to get you all excited?
Dripping with love below and above anything upright would do
Yet you pointed your finger at everyone around until the only one left was you
The price that I paid for you was all too much, I wish that I had known
That you were discounted and were on sale for the loose change that they had thrown
Now that I am free from your lethal grip, emotionally disabled and sore
I know for certain that the first thing you’ll do is knock at the lowest bidder’s door
